Low-Code Development
Development speed, engineering capacity, and technical skills are among the most prevalent bottlenecks for teams tasked with modernizing legacy codebases and innovating new solutions. In response, an explosion of “low-code” solutions has promised to mitigate such challenges by abstracting software development to a high-level visual or scripting language used to build integrations, automate processes, construct UI, and more. While many tools aim to democratize development by reducing the required skills, others seek to enhance developer productivity by eliminating needs such as custom code for boilerplate app components. Over the last decade, the concept of low code has matured into a category of viable solutions that are expected to be incorporated within mainstream application development. In this Trend Report, DZone examines advances in the low-code space, including developers' perceptions of low-code solutions, various use cases and adoption trends, and strategies for successful integration of these tools into existing development processes.

Getting pro-coders and low-coders to collaborate is important. Most technology companies offer low-code or no-code solutions. Alpha Software recently released its development platform that allows both types of users to develop apps in tandem because the software has both a low-code development environment that lets developers add code at will and a no-code app builder that guides novices through basic app development.

Enjoyed the article, Mark. We're hearing more IT leaders who are comfortable letting business users take the lead on these task-based apps.
We've recently shared an infographic on demographics of typical citizen developers from the University of Alabama (https://www.alphasoftware.com/blog/citizen-developer).

Enjoyed the article, Anupama. Great overview of low-code software, its benefits and some top players in the segment. Another low-code app development platform to be aware of is Alpha Software, which has no-code and low-code environments built into the same platform: https://www.alphasoftware.com/blog/is-low-code-or-no-code-better-for-you

Enjoyed this read, Alireza. Whether or not I fully agree with your argument, it's great to see members of the community promote and discuss this idea. We're overdue for gender equity in IT.

For those who enjoyed this read, here's a follow-on piece I wrote about digital transformation you may find helpful.
Jul 08, 2020 · Thomas Peham
Enjoyed the article, Thomas. Low code development has its pros and cons - not all tools are created equal. The trick is to speed routine work for developers, but always allow them to add code and value when needed. Enable, don't handicap developers.

I'm enjoying the comments and perspectives here. I wanted to share a related Alpha Software piece on why mobile forms are such an important part of digital transformation.
Apr 29, 2020 · Dan Lines
Enjoyed your article and appreciated seeing real data on developer productivity. Developers we're talking to are definitely increasing their productivity. For example, they're being asked to digitize paper forms (which can carry/disperse COVID-19) so companies can reopen in line with guidance and social distancing requirements. I just wrote about it: https://www.alphasoftware.com/blog/covid-19-the-end-of-paper-forms
Apr 19, 2020 · Andre Lee-Moye
I agree more developers should good low-code a try, BUT not all low-code solutions are equal. It's correct that many solutions greatly limit what developers can do and where they can add code. It's important to cut out some time-consuming routine work (ex. have offline built-in to the low-code solution), and allow developers to focus on advanced business requirements for their organization/users.
Apr 19, 2020 · DZone_karap
Exactly, Johan! There are a lot of talented developers out there. The best low-code solutions help these talented developers become proficient at mobile apps. For example, robust offline capability can take weeks to develop and master. Alpha Anywhere has it built-in so developers build apps already offline-capable, and they can focus on higher-value business requirements.

Good stuff, Tom. AI is definitely here. Unfortunately, many companies getting excited about AI don't realize that successful AI depends on models built using good data. I recently wrote an article about it. Curious to hear what people think.

Great read, Karthick. I think businesses are going to see more of no-code and low-code solutions. But what about a single platform that can do both? Environments for both experienced developers and business users needing data collection apps, but always allowing developers to take the apps where they need to go: https://www.alphasoftware.com/mobile-app-development-platform
Apr 19, 2020 · Harbinder Kang
Developers aren't going away! They're critical to advanced, robust applications. Low code solutions will help skilled developers get routine work out of the way (or push business app requirement gathering to the business units) so they can focused on higher-value development like advanced security and integration.
For those interested, the Alpha Anywhere low-code development platform is offering extended trials and free licenses during the pandemic:

Great information, Johan. Low-code is definitely on the upswing.
For anyone who is looking to try Alpha Anywhere the Alpha Anywhere low-code platform (won the InfoWorld Tech of the Year for having built-in robust offline capability), they're offering extended trials right now and giving away free licenses for anyone building COVID-19 related apps: https://www.alphasoftware.com/covid-19-apps

Completely agree, Nazim. "Custom data entry controls” or “mobile optimized keyboards” are critical in modern business app development, particularly if you’re serving standing workers in the field.
For example, a worker inspecting construction equipment at a site may need to do all data capture on a small smartphone screen with one hand, as he takes measurements or checks tire pressure. An interface for a desktop worker would never serve in this situation. Large buttons, customized data entry keyboards, or a field that understands how tire pressure measurements should format, could make for rapid data entry. Here’s the example:

I’d suggest Alpha Anywhere (www.alphasoftware.com).
It's a low-code web & mobile app development platform that gets near-perfect reviews from its customers on review sites like Gartner Peer Insights and Capterra, won InfoWorld’s Tech of the Year award, can benefit both experienced and novice developers/users, and is one of the most affordable platforms on the market.

Great follow-on read. Thanks, John.
May 02, 2017 · Arran Glen
That's definitely the perception, Greg. IT cannot be cobbled with a low-code solution that limits what developers can do. The solution must empower a wider range of users, while always allowing IT to go in and add code at any point - otherwise, a "low-code" solution is "low value" or doesn't get the job done...https://www.alphasoftware.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/bridge.jpg

IMO, IT MUST embrace citizen development. My whitepaper ("The Democratization of Web and Mobile App Development") compares the rise of citizen developers to the rise of business analysts (By 2020, at least 70% of large enterprises will have established successful citizen development policies." (Gartner))
Daily, I speak with citizen developers who use RMAD.
